Explain how to adapt communication with children and young people for The age of the child or young person

1.2:2 Explain how to adapt communication with children and young people for:
1. The age of the child or young person
Children coming from primary school to secondary school will go through many changes. They are aged between 11 and 12 years old. Their bodies will be changing as well with reaching the age of puberty. With this they become aware of bodily and mental changes. They can get very self conscious and will become embarrassed easily which is why we have to take care of our approach to children at a certain age. We should try and avoid putting them in to situations that could embarrass them. Try and gain their trust/confidence so that you or they can approach one another if needing to talk about anything.

2. The context of communication
Communication with a child/young person can be improved at the likes of sports or school activities such as school trips away. When starting to talk to child/young person it is usually best to try and talk about them about something they like. For example talk to them about football, music or computer games. When talking about something they know it is always better and makes them feel more comfortable when talking to you. As well you can talk to them about hobbies, interests, friends and family which will hopefully let you know some of things they do at home and outside of school. This will make it easier to start a conversation off by asking about a family member or what a certain activity was like. Making the child/young person talk to you in friendly way. But it is important to remember though that you are not the chid/young person friend or parent you have to always be clear about your role.

    It is important to adapt communication to include all children. In my class the children are always greeted with a smile, good morning and how are you today. Some of the children have news to tell us. I get down to their level and have eye contact and listen to what they have to say. I always show interest in what they are saying as it boosts their confidence and shows that you care.
