Exemplification Essay: Volunteering At Howard Elementary School
Last year, in August I found out my father had been cheating on my mother. April 18,2017 my parents had officially become divorced. This meant after 15 yrs. , my mother was going back to work. For me, this meant a drastic increase in responsibility. Quite frequently, in the mornings I have to wake up early to get my fourteen year old brother off to school. If I hurry him too much he will get frustrated and if we move too slow, I will be late to school. I come home in the evenings, and regardless of how I feel, one of my first priorities is to see how my little brother is doing. He gets bullied sometimes and doesn’t have very many friends. I volunteer at my church, in the preschool classroom. Occasionally I teach lessons but I also hand out snack, and intervene when needed to help create positive conflict resolution. I also read books to them.Volunteering at my church was something I grew to love because at first I was super awkward and it seemed perhaps even a little minatory though eventually I relaxed tremendously. Working with the children does tend to tucker me out when we have too many kids and not enough teachers. …show more content…
Every other Friday my sophomore year, and last year every Friday, my whole AVID class would go to Howard Elementary and spend time with the 3rd graders. Howard is my old elementary school and in many ways, like home. Both me and my little brother went there so most of the teachers know me. Currently , the teacher’s classroom that I volunteer in used to be my 3rd grade teacher. Her name is Allison Kreider. When I visit my 3rd grade buddie, we don’t always get much done because we talk a lot. That is the part I enjoy the most- not to mention the drawing, writing and editing we get to do. I know for a fact that I have benefitted as my social skills have much improved. It certainly is interesting seeing children mature over the course of a school year and to know that the things you do and say have a real impact on

I am constantly reminding parents when they pick up and/or drop off their children that they are always more than welcome to come in and volunteer. When talking to parents about volunteering I let them know what a great impact it has on their children when they do take the time to come in and volunteer in their child’s classroom. It’s also great for the parents as well; they get the chance to see where their children spend most of their day and see the different activities they do and games they play with the teachers and staff. I think volunteering is a wonderful thing for parents to do, for not only their children, but for themselves and also the…

Each year in November I volunteer at The Basket Brigade. We assemble boxes full of food for the less fortunate to have for Thanksgiving/the holiday season. After assembling the boxes we each take 4-5 and deliver them to anyone who has requested them. This opportunity is very eye opening, it shows you how much a little kindness goes and how thankful people are that you care. I have also volunteered at Feed My Starving Children for the last few years. This organization allows you to help pack food to send to children across the…

My father and mother later on separated and finalized that with a divorce. My mother later on found love and her wounds began healing. Even though she was getting better socially and emotionally, she still lived in constant fear and depression. She also had shame due to the incident. My mother very strong and is the pillar of our family. We always look up to her for very many things which make her the strongest person in our family. My brother took up the role and became the man of the house. He is always trying to fill our father’s shoes by doing all the chores that look manly enough. He also studies very hard in school so as not to disappoint my mother the way my father disappointed her. It puts a lot of pressure on him but in a good way since he turns negative feelings to positive work. Our youngest sister is the most affected one since she is slow with her school work and chores at home. She always expects someone, especially my mother to take care of her. Have you had any volunteer experiences and, if so, what did you like about participating? Give at least one example of what you liked. I have volunteered with Canterbury United Methodist Church on a mission trip and the Birmingham Zoo. When I volunteered with Canterbury, we went on a mission trip to Asheville, North Carolina for a week during the summer. I had the opportunity to travel to another city, in a different state, to help those who are less fortunate and live in harsh conditions. Seeing the harsh conditions that some people live in was very eye-opening for me because it really made me realize how fortunate, not only I, but the rest of my community is. I loved helping the people in Asheville because I knew that it is something they…

I volunteered at Texas Humane Heroes, a local animal welfare organization that gives a homeless dog or cat a chance of finding home. It is a nonprofit organization that benefits from the involvement of volunteers. This was a very unique experience because I got to work with a lot of different volunteers and staff members. There were different volunteering opportunities from foster volunteering to helping out around the place. I helped around the place with other volunteers. We cleaned the dog and cat cages and washed their bowls. It wasn’t fun to pick up their waste, but we got to play with the puppies and the kittens. We also had to greet customers and inform them about the cats and the dogs that they had up there. In the afternoon, we had to walk the dogs. So many volunteers and I, took the dogs out.…

As my son was finishing up his PreK program the teachers announced their retirement. I quickly knew this was my opportunity to live out my dream of being a preschool teacher. As part of my CDA requirements I needed to spend time in a classroom so I began volunteering in my daughters PreK class. I enjoyed being encouraged to be creative and playful in daily activities and have a substantial input in the classroom curriculum and schedule. I really liked using games, storytelling, and other activities to help children develop language and vocabulary, improve social skills, and learn basic science and math concepts. The highlights of my days volunteering was when I saw a child’s eyes light up when they learn/try something new. When they suddenly were able to make the letters in their name, or do something they weren’t previously able to do, I got as excited as they did. When the children were lined up waiting to come into class, and then run in and give me a hug, it warmed my…

I've volunteered in a number of places and many events, but the one's that have left an impact on me is my time spent at The Women's safe house and Guardian Angels shop and food pantry. They both helped my family through the crisis of leaving my abusive father financially, emotionally, and physically. At the Woman safe house I couldn't help but see the kids and teenager that I was babysitting and see myself in there place and I quickly became that mentor I and help them see past the darkness and into their bright futures. I wanted to give back to the guardian angels for helping us with clothes and food so now I help run their thrift shop and work as the secretary during pantry day. “We make a living by what we do, but we make a life by what we give.” While brainstorming ideas for this essay I came across this quote by Winston Churchill. Even if you are making a good living for yourself, you should always take time out of your day to give back; you never know when you might need someone to help you out. Volunteering my time to my community has always been something I’ve made time for. Not only does volunteering help others, but it can affect your own character. By volunteering you learn social skills, gain work experience, and if you are lucky enough, it will change your life.…

This is Tammy Ngo, and I know that you are very busy and have a lot of things on your plate but I have been inquiring about my badge for the last one and a half week without result. I had tried to attend to this matter in a timely matter in order to reduce the trouble it might cause everyone. I do admit that it was initially my fault in losing the badge and missing my shift on 1/16 (the day after I lost my badge and found it missing). I had tried my best to reach you through emails and phone calls to the volunteer office when on 1/19, you told me that my badge would be ready for me in front of the office by Saturday; which was the day of my next shift. Since I was expecting my badge by my next shift, I did not reschedule any of my future shift on the assumption that the matter will be resolved.…

Through the course of five weeks I have tutored a third grader by the name of Willy one hour each Thursday. Willy is a high-spirited kid who loves to learn. He goes to a school named Corpus Christi, a school I spent my sixth through eighth grade years at, and is also the organization I volunteered for. I chose this particular work because I love working with kids considering I have 4 younger brothers and sisters. This also gave me an opportunity to put my knowledge to good use and to be a good role-model towards Willy. What I gained from this experience is satisfaction from helping a young student cope with his academic struggles and learn to surpass them in order to be successful. I most definitely would do this project again if I had the chance.…

Since the beginning of the trimester, I have been volunteering three days a week in a second grade classroom at Oak Trace Elementary School. I have enjoyed every minute of my time here because I feel so appreciated by everyone that I help. Every day I walk in, I am greeted by the women in the office, and then I am usually waved to by a student in the hall on the way to my classroom. Once I get to the classroom, I am greeted in the best possible way by the students. Most of them will run up and hug me, and Mrs. Hall will always greet me and then put me to work. Lately, I have been leading math stations in the hallway. Mrs. Hall says that the kids often get very rowdy in the hallway, but that she trusts me to take authority in this kind of situation.…
