Ethics issues in an Academic Environment
Ethics issues in an academic environment are issues every school has to deal with. One would be surprised on the use of new technology that student use to cheat on exams, test, and finals in schools today. The use of pagers, iPods, calculators, watches, cell phones and online papers is more popular than one would think in our society today. With this wave to new technology, schools have been forced to implement polices to combat technology being used to cheat.
The use of iPods and pagers is a real problem in schools today. Teachers are not allowing students to bring these new devices in to class on days they are having test, exams or finals, due to the advantages that the use of these can bring to a student is tremendous. A person could be downloading the answers of a test to the iPod and listen to the iPod at the same time. To do so, a person would hook the iPod to a computer and download the information into the iPod and no one would know. What is this teaching the children of our society? What has happened to academic integrity in college and high school? This is a new technique of cheating teachers once had to look under the brims of hats or on the legs of the students to make sure that they were not hiding the answers. Now they have to ban the use of electronic devices in class because who is to say what they are listen to, a song that they have downloaded or the Gettysburg address.” IPods, pagers and other digital media players are the latest threat to academic integrity on college campus’ and in high school” Mary Jane (2007) There was a study done in” Eyes on Cheaters” by McCabe and 50% of the respondents said that they did not think copying answers from a test was wrong, this was according to an article in Weekly Reader.
