My community was relatively small, we did not have a many of the amenities that big cities had, but we had more of a sense of community and family which people cannot find in a big city environment. We have a small neighbor paper that wrote about things going on in the community and definitely represents the people in the community. Our television news covers different events, the good and bad, which happen throughout the town. I think the people who live in my community are good and decent people, very hospitable, caring and helpful. The community was a good place to grow up in. Most of the neighborhoods in Oroville were well kept, and we never had separate neighborhoods with separate races in them. Maybe I may have been sheltered, but to me Oroville was just a small and friendly town. Today, Oroville is much larger and diverse than it was when I was a child. The town has grown so much since I was a child. Oroville now has two gyms, a Wal-Mart, a Home Depot, and an Applebee’s.
The minorities in my community were treated well, like any other person, to the best of my knowledge. We all treated one another like family, and I could find people of different races living, working, going to school, and shopping all in the same places. In the ninth grade my mom sent me to public school. She thought I needed to interact with other people. I think that knowing how to interact with people is a very good lesson in its self. She also sent me to public school because she was having a hard time teaching me and my brother when we started this level in school. I remember noticing when I was in high school that the students did hang out in different and somewhat separate ways. Most of the Asians hung out in one particular area, while the 'rednecks' hung out in another area mainly in the agriculture area because that is where most of their classes were.
