When Malcolm moved out, he moved out with Shorty to Boston and started mingling in the nightlife and Boston underworld. He was amazed at the difference in atmosphere relatively compared to small town suburbia in Lansing, Michigan. He was overwhelmed as anyone would be, and emulated a lot of things he saw different people do. He wanted the money as people in Boston flaunted it; he wanted the beautiful women, etc. He started trying to be like the white man, dying his hair red-wearing a zonk, funny shoes and his cousin Ella started noticing the change in young Malcolm.

When Malcolm moved from Boston, to other places the temptations only grew stronger. He was using drugs more frequently than ever; in his own words he said he smoked more than a couple ounces a week. He was a constant customer in the local bars, and liked using the white clientele for prostitutes. He eventually turns to burglary and ends up in prison. This is where Malcolm starts transforming and his brother convert Malcolm to the Nation of Islam, and the respectable Elijah Muhammed. Inspired by the faith, Malcolm stops using drugs, reads voraciously, prays, studies English and Latin, and joins the prison debate team. He writes every day to the leader of Islam and instantly quits all drugs, cigarette, and alcohol. He refuses to eat pork, which stirs quite an argument in the prison, considering small things are worked up in prison.

Although Malcolm did not move out under these circumstances, Malcolm moved out because he wanted to start life on his own. After bouncing from several disruptive tenures in foster homes, the life without any grown figure father or mother; led to Malcolm’s eventual incarceration in prison for breaking and entering.
