Response: Ralph Waldo Emerson “The American Scholar”
Ralph Emerson was a remarkable writer. Emerson’s work “The American Scholar” was a difficult read because Emerson uses a peculiar style of writing. I found his writings different for the reason that he disguises his ideas by using unusual metaphors and similes in “The American Scholar”. I feel that Emerson wrote this piece to depict his definition of what an American Scholar should represent.
Emerson breaks down the ideal American scholar into three categories: Nature, books-mind of past, and action. I feel that Emerson wanted to show the three transition stages one must undertake in order to be titled an ‘American Scholar’. In the first category nature, Emerson wants one to learn to appreciate how things work together to maintain a balance. I feel that Emerson wanted to show that self reliance will not get you far because without an understanding of God’s creation (nature) in which one exist. In the second category the Past, Emerson felt that books were the most effective manner to get the ‘truth’ about the past. He also felt that books should only be used to inspire ones and not to be used to produce similar works. From the last category action, Emerson’s depicts his idea that one’s actions help mold them into a better person. Emerson felt that the more active an individual than the better their character.
In summary, Emerson wanted people to realize that it takes more than just ‘book smarts’ to be considered a scholar. He wanted to show how everything in life has a connection and the more one understands them (connection) could make for a better life. Overall, I think Emerson wanted readers to think beyond the ideal scholar and realize anyone who is a “thinking man” could be an “American Scholar” .
