Managing solid waste is a challenge that many urban communities within the United States and neighboring countries, face daily. With an increase of world population, the production of large amounts of solid waste has become a major problem and an issue of great concern. The municipal government has assumed the responsibility of collecting, transferring and disposing gross amounts of waste and the process of collecting this waste, in most urban communities, varies between private contractors and government agencies. Many landfills have become cluttered with volumes of municipal solid waste materials that can be reused, recycled or composted or incinerated. By incorporating source reduction when purchasing goods, one makes a major impact on the environment and ensures that the purchase of wasteful products is kept to a minimum. Reducing the amount of items purchased and ensuring that product packaging is recyclable, helps to keep valuable materials out of the landfills. With the rapid urbanization of the United States, municipal solid waste management is a dilemma that cries for resolutions through solutions that attack the root of waste and makes source reduction and recycling viably economical for everyone.
Waste is commonly disposed of by dumping onto land or in bodies of water, incineration or it is securely stored for long periods of time at a waste management facility. Each of these methods effects the environment negatively and can have adverse environmental and health risks if disposed or stored improperly. One would define solid waste as trash, garbage, waste material, refuse, or even in general, anything that can be thrown away.
