This article is about the myths that the medical world and people place on schizophrenia. The first myth that the article talks about is that once someone is a schizophrenic they always will be one. The article then goes into saying how this myth came about from overburdened clinicians and other causes. Slowly this misconception is changing and clinicians are realizing that people can make a full recovery from this mental illness with proper care, medication, and therapy. The second myth is that all schizophrenics are the same. This is untrue because there is a wide variety of severity of this disease and the worst cases do not reflect up on the general population people with schizophrenia. The third myth is that rehabilitation can be provided only after stabilization. The remaining four myths are all centered around treatment and lifestyles of patients.
I was one of those people before taking this course and reading on schizophrenia that thought there was no hope for people with this disease. Now I have better grasp and understanding of this disease and realize that there is hope for these people. It is just a shame that our society is so caught up in the whims and rumors that myths slowly start becoming mixed in with what we think is factual information. I thought the speaker in class really made realize that this disease is real. Since this disease is biologically based I think there will eventually be a cure for this disease. We just have not taken the research to the next level most of our medical research goes to afflictions of other parts of the body rather than the brain. When we gain a grasp of the disease progress will be made. There seems to be light at the end of the tunnel for mental health patients with schizophrenia, even though it seems like the tunnel is extremely long.
