Elvis

Elvis Aaron Presley, born January 8th, 1935 in a small town called Tupelo, Mississippi. His mother and father, Gladys and Vernon, raised Elvis in a small one story house on the not so wealthy side of town.(Elvis 56) Nesta Robert Marley, also known as Bob Marley, was born February 6th, 1945 in the small village of Nine Mile in Saint Ann Parish, Jamaica. His mother Cedella raised Bob in a small one story shack due to the fact his father Norval just paid to support Bob but was never really around.(Fineworth) Although Marley and Elvis were of different ethnicities they were pioneers that shared the same vision.
Elvis always had a niche to sing, and at the age of 18 his whole life changed. Elvis was working as a truck driver when he first knew he was going to be a star. Elvis released an album and it was a smash hit on a small radio station in Mississippi. Elvis soon after got offered six appearances on the “Dorsey Brothers Show”. They say the “Dorsey Brothers Show” gave Elvis over night success.(Elvis 56’) No one had ever seen anyone like Elvis before in their lives. The teenage girls where especially attached to Elvis. Numerous were shocked to find out that Elvis was white, due to the fact that his music is a mixture of rhythm/blues and country. Soon after these performances Elvis would never be the same, 1956 was Elvis’ breakthrough year and from then on is history.
Marley became friends with Neville "Bunny" Livingston, with whom he started to play music. He left school at the age of 14 and started as an apprentice at a local welder's shop. In his free time, he and Livingston made music with Joe Higgs, a local singer and devout Rastafri who is regarded by many as Marley's mentor. In 1962, Marley recorded his first two singles, "Judge Not" and "One Cup of Coffee". Soon after Marley met the guys that would form his band “The Wailers” and the rest is history.(Fineworth)
