Bilingualism as we know it defines the type of people we need to run this country from here out. As more and more immigrants speaking other languages enter the U.S. we are conflicted throughout public places with not being able to communicate. Figuring out what it takes for them as well as ourselves to learn to speak other languages it helps remind us that it is our willingness that puts us above and beyond. Willingness to learn our language is what most think would make them model citizens. Though willingness on our part would make us the epitome of the culture they wanted to begin with. Learning about our bodies and brains allows for the usage and ability aspect to become clearer and make for a better reason why everyone should learn a new language. The language we learn sets up for all the communication we will ever have, this is why learning the function, how it serves us, and the parts of our brain we use to learn this, we will also learn how to better ourselves in the language of our choice.
The function of learning bilingualism is to help us all communicate effectively with the people around us and therefore further understand the beauty other languages hold. When a child is learning to speak there are certain things it learns to pronounce in particular words or phrases. Pronunciation poses what Americans are said to have problems with when it comes down to Basic English. Another problem that bilingual speakers face is the ability to fully speak another language. The movie title “Lost in Translation” fully explains the problems that many people face when they transfer one phrase to another language. Basically the function of learning new languages is to broaden our horizons and expand our culture.
