Effectiveness of Internship in commercial banks in Bangladesh

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to measure the effect of the structure of internship program, coordination between academic internship supervisor and bank official who supervises interns in bank, cooperation of bank employees with interns, and student quality on the performance of interns during their internship program in commercial banks in Bangladesh. BBA students from five private universities in Dhaka city who have just recently completed their internship have been interviewed. Multiple Regression Analysis and Analysis of Variance have been conducted. The results show that student quality has a strong positive influence on internship performance. The result also indicates the possibility of the presence of other factors that can also influence internship performance. Besides, the coordination level between academic internship supervisor and bank official who supervises interns has been found very poor.

Introduction:
To establish a link between classroom theory and professional practice and to reinforce the use of academic skills, many academic programs, especially those which prepare the students with some specific professional skills, include internship program in their curricula. Students enter into internship program after completing all theoretical courses and during the transition from academic career to corporate career when they work in a chosen corporate field for a short period of time to earn some real world experience. This program is meant to increase self-awareness, manage emotions, and increase integrity. This also provides students with experiences many of them would not otherwise encounter and instills in them recognition that education lays the groundwork for economic and social well-being.
