Effective Mentoring Effects Children’s Future and
How It Will Make a Worthwhile Social Investment In Joseph Durlak’s Editorial, “Are Mentoring Programs a Worthwhile Social Investment”, he discusses how these programs help with children’s test scores and how these programs help with making a more modest person but does this hold up in the long run. He argues that there is little research done to observe if mentoring programs will have other positive effects similar to educational attainment (even though we see high academic test scores at this time), juvenile offending, substance use, and obesity prevention. In order to know how well these programs are, policymakers must support a system where we can monitor the program by mentor screening and training. This article is relevant to Bandura’s work in how people learn with observating. This later builds positive personality by using these mentoring programs to help build a positive environment, acceptable behaviors, and a strong cognitive mind. Being in a positive surrounding or with a good mentor then there will be a high chance for the child to observe and obtain these constructive qualities. What I have learned from all this is that, “You are whom you hang out with” and “You are what you eat.” What I mean by saying that is that if you are always around good and moral people then you will eventually pick up some of these attributes. My father always told me to always hang around rich people because then one day I will also become rich. I thought that was silly but I eventually understood what he meant by that. Being around wealthy people all the time might mean I will learn things that will make me the same. For example, learning how to conduct business or attract potential investors by the way to act, talk, and dress.
