The Effect Of Techknology On Music

Millions of people walk around campus carrying their pink iPod minis, jogging downtown with their white iPod nanos and listening to flash MP3 players from other companies. The iPod is the revolutionary way to listen to music and is considered a large fashion statement in today’s society. These portable devices are convenient and allow people to listen to music anywhere. The use of MP3 players and iPods have affected the music sales and as a result, the number of people that buy CD’s and listen to the radio are down. However, even before the invention of the iPod, music sales had been decreasing as more people started to illegally download music with peer-to-peer software such as Napster, Kazaa, Limewire, and Bearshare. The popularity of technology before the iPod has decreased, CD sales have struggled and the way people listen to music has been forever changed by these technological breakthroughs.
The Apple’s iPod has played a major role in the death of famous radio stations. The hours that people spend listening to the radio are declining because younger audiences are switching to iPods and mixed CDs. Radio stations have been cutting down on the number of commercials per hour, hoping more people will tune in to the station. Chicago radio station, WBEZ, was one of the oldest public radio outlets in the U.S. that played mostly jazz. Now, instead of the jazz music, a twenty-four hour news and public affairs program plays on that radio station. Many loyal jazz fans are upset about this change. Likewise, Philadelphia lost their one and only modern rock alternative radio station. This station was switched from its alternative rock format to a hip hop station,
