Social Media are websites and applications for social networking. Students communicate with their friends, family and strangers on this social media. There are many social networks available for students to communicate all over the world with people. Facebook, twitter, MySpace to mention a few are social networking site which every student has an account with, students create their a profile and put their information about themselves for their friends. In a country like Nigeria, students get access to the Internet through their phone, which gives them the opportunity to get on various social media. The problem with students with social media is that they tend to forget the reality and focus on the network. They don’t socialize any more with people but they tend to socialize very well on the Facebook, twitter and so on, have less able effectively unable to communicate in person. Some students especially University students rely on accessibility of information on social media which makes them reduce focus in learning. Student tend to multi task, they open social media sites on their phones or laptops while studying. These students show reduced academic performances. They lack the ability to concentrate on the studying whereas being distracted by Facebook or twitter. Students lack attitude towards proper spelling and grammar. Most of their words are in abbreviations of some social media sites, which they develop. This tends to reduce student’s ability to effectively write without relying on the computer’s auto correct. Social Media has effects among students in Nigeria through the above problems.
