Mentoring as a Method to Enhance Seven Vectors of Student Development in Higher Education to Becoming Servant Leader

ABSTRACT

Satya Wacana Christian University (SWCU) embraces a vision of becoming academic community who create leaders to transform the nation. Leaders who can transform a nation are leaders that have a servant attitude. Servant Leadership is a leadership in which the leader transcends self-interest to serve the needs of others, help others grow, and provide opportunities for others to gain materially and emotionally (Daft, 2005). To promote growth of the students becoming servant leaders, SWCU should give emphasize on facilitating the development of student’s character in proportional balance with the development of student’s cognitive.
Student’s character development in higher education can be understood by The Seven Vectors: General Developmental Directions that proposed by Chickering (1993). The seven vectors are developing competence, managing emotions, moving through autonomy toward independence, developing mature interpersonal relationships, establishing identity, developing purpose, and developing integrity. These can be use as maps to help determine where students are and which way they are heading.
As the implementation of Seven Vectors Theory, Psychology Faculty of SWCU develops a program for new students called Psychology Students Identity Empowering (PSIE). The heart of this program is the mentoring process, where the senior student becoming a mentor for the new student, build a relationship with them, help them to adapt during their first semester in university, invest their life to develop them. One senior student becomes a mentor for five new students. This mentoring process gives advantage for both parties. The new students will get help and advice, while the senior students will learn about helping and serve others....
