The Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre (BMSC) is an isolated marine
sciences teaching and research facility that provides education to a broad group of students and brings in a large group of experts in various aspects of marine sciences as instructors to teach a variety of courses throughout the year. This paper will look at the possibilities of instituting an e-learning program at BMSC and what it could provide for BMSC.

Defining asynchronous and real-time communication
The foundation of any sort of e-learning involves the ability to have open communication between the teacher and the students. Communication through computers can be achieved in several ways, but they all fall into two categories: asynchronous communication or real-time communication. For the sake of this paper, we will define these two terms in order to maintain a solid a quick dialogue throughout the rest of the paper. Asynchronous communication is a communication format that allows for a person to send a message and for the recipient to read the message at his/her leisure. Examples of this type of communication are email and forums. Real-time communication is any form of communication where all people involved communicate in real time, or like they were having a conversation together in the same place at the same time. Real time communication requires that all involved are communicating simultaneously, and the drawback to this is you have to plan to be available at the same time in order to communicate. Examples of real time communication are chat, instant messaging, voice over internet protocol (VOIP) telephone, and whiteboard.
