MEDICATION: Oxytocin ( Pitocin )
INDICATION: IV: Induction of labor at term. Fascilitation of threatened abortion.
Post-partum control of bleeding after expulsion of the placenta.
ACTION: Stimulates uterine smooth muscle, producing uterine smooth muscle,
producing uterine contractions similar to those in spontaneous labor.
Stimulates mammary gland smooth muscle, facilitating lactation.Has
vasopressor and anti-diuretic effects. Induction of labor.
CONTRAINDICATION: Hypersensitivity. Anticipated non-vaginal delivery.
PRECAUTIONS: Use cautiously in the first and second stages of labor.
ADVERSE REACTIONS AND SIDE EFFECTS: Maternal adverse reactions are noted
for IV use only. CNS: Maternal-seizures, coma: fetal-intracranial
hemorrhage. RESP: Fetal –hypoxia, asphyxia. CV: Maternal –
hypotension; fetal arrhythmias. F and E: Maternal-water intoxication,
hyponatremia, hypochloremia. Misc: Maternal- abruption placenta,
hypersensitivity, painful contractions, decreased uterine blood flow,
increased uterine motility.
INTERACTIONS: Drug-Drug :-Severe hypertension may occur if oxytocin follows
administration of vasopressors. Concurrent use with cyclopropane
anesthesia may result in excessive hypotension.
ROUTE AND DOSAGE: Induction and stimulation of labor in IV (adults) 0.5-2
milliunits/min increase by 1-2 milliunits/min q15-60 min until
patterns established (maximum 20 milliunits/min), then
