Whose Dream Is It?

“I have a dream” (line 1) is how Jay P. Narain starts her poem titled “Dreams” and “I have a dream” is heard throughout the I Have a Dream Speech by Martin Luther King Jr. Ever since people began coming to this country they have been in search of the American dream. The American dream started back when other countries first started coming to this world. They wanted to find and have things that they were unable to receive where they were from. These people came here looking for more and looking for a better life then the one they left behind. The American dream was developed through the things that these people were in search for. This dream started with very basic and broad ideas and overtime would develop into more specific and individualized dreams.
The American dream began with certain ideas and thoughts and over time it has still stayed with those basic principles, but has slightly changed with the progression of the years. The American dream began as a dream based on wanting to have political and religious freedom, idealism, a strong realism, and a better and richer life (Adams 292, 298, 317). Many people left their countries in hope that they may be able to find a place that gave them more of what they wanted and chances to do different things in life that they were unable to receive in their own country. They traveled here to the new world and began a life based on these ideas that they had and what the American dream was suppose to provide for them.
The American dream began with basic ideas that everyone was in search for. All of these basic ideas were being sought for by many individuals who came to this country and their families that came after them. They kept the simple idea that they wanted close at hand and in their heart. That was what they were seeking and they kept it simple.
