A Review of Dracula

My boyfriend and I attended Dracula at the Baton Rouge Little Theater. Neither of us had ever been to a production by Baton Rouge Little Theater, nor had we seen or read Dracula previously. The only thing I knew about Dracula was that he is a vampire and that in order to sustain life, vampires must suck blood from humans. I had heard that this was a more modernized version of the play, so I imagined it would be set in the 20th century.

Even though we had dressed up, I really was not expecting the formal attire that people were wearing. When we arrived at the theater, we found our seats and were pleased to discover that we had an excellent view of the stage. If facing the stage, we were seated in the mid section, a little to the right in the audience.

The play began with Mina and Lucy discussing marriage. Mina said that she was engaged, and Lucy added that she had been proposed to by three men, one being Seward, a young owner of a mental institution. Lucy had told Seward that she didn’t want to marry him. As the play progressed, Dracula came into Lucy’s bedroom and bit her on the neck. Seward noticed the marks, and got Van Helsing to help him save her. It was too late to save Lucy and she died. Mina, during the course of the play, was bitten by Dracula, but it was decided that if Mina killed Dracula, she would live. They found Dracula and killed him with a dagger; Mina was saved.

The play was set in 1897 in London, England, and Transylvania. In Lucy’s bedroom, one would find a bed and full length window. In Dracula’s home in Transylvania, there was a half sized wall that would be approximately waist high. This was used also as part of Lucy’s coffin. In the background, all across the stage there were ragged sheets hanging from the ceiling. On the right of the stage, there was a cross hanging from the ceiling with similar ragged sheets hanging...
