INTRODUCTION
Located in Werribee, Department of Primary Industries (DPI) – Chemistry Laboratory main focus is to carry out analytical chemistry with core capabilities such as mass spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy and separation science - Chromatography. Here in Werribee, the main research is often associated with capability statements for inorganic and organic chemistry. Inorganic chemistry focuses on analytical chemistry and its interpretation to support other science platforms, whereas in organic chemistry, it mostly investigates food safety together with environment and health issues encompassing pesticide and antibiotic use in agriculture. Besides all these, there are many other groups and platforms that have been branched out, such as Plant Sciences, Animal Sciences, Environment & Resource Sciences, Commercialisation & Partnerships, just to name a few. Alternatively, all these industries are generally performed in other 19 DPI Research Centres all across Victoria, for instance, grain industry is done in Horsham, grapes in Mildura, pasteurization in Hamilton and dairy in Elinbank. In view of the above, it is evident that DPI is a geographically diverse organisation. While having many government agencies, companies and laboratories seeking for their capability to provide scientific technical advice, DPI continues to develop efficient analytical services to maintain the capacity in order to respond to emerging agricultural, environmental and public health issues.
OBJECTIVES
The main objective of this report is to focus on the many ways of analytical organic and inorganic chemistry carried out by DPI in Werribee, using key instruments such as gas chromatography (GC), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), mass spectrometry, robotic sample extraction device, and wet chemistry (solvent extraction), this report highlights how they are performed and also, the efficiency and importance of these analytical instruments with enhanced innovation and quality...
