Scalawag- The term used for a white southerner who joined the recon. party after the civil war. Carpetbaggers- a term used to describe Northerners who moved to the south after war. (Often seen as people take advantages of southerners) General Sherman- North General, burned city(scorched earth policy: broke s’s will to fight) War is hell. Fugitive Slave Act- runaway slave were not entitled to a grail by jury. Helping runaway slave was subject to a fine or imprisonment. Sharecropper- black farmers work a small area of land. Keep part of the crop and give the rest to the landowner. The battle of Gettysburg- made Lee gives up plans for future attacks on north. Reconstruction Act- abolished confederate state governments. Fourteenth Amendment- black has citizenship. States cannot restrict right of people. Enforced by federal gov. not states.
