Should We Stay Together?!
“Would you take her to be your wedded beloved wife for all “eternity”?” “I do!” “I take you to be my friend, lover, parent of my children, promise to take care of you in sickness and in health, to respect you in your success and failure, and to grow with you throughout the seasons of life!” (Nina Callaway, 2003). There is nothing better than a happy marriage! However, an everlasting marriage is hard to find these days and divorce rates are skyrocketing. Divorce should not be seen as a last resort and since couples are married, then they are obliged to try solving problems if any, because even though divorce is now easy, it has both social and moral concerns which affects society’s view on women and also relates to religious issues.
Despite the fact that divorce might be a solution to a failing marriage, people must not expect perfection when they go into marriage; nor should they think of it as based solely on romantic love or as in movies. In fact, marriage is both a union that is based on love and a practical partnership that, like all relationships, has its own ups and downs, and has to be worked at to make it succeed (Richard Mott, 2000). Due to false cultural and traditional beliefs, divorced women are the ones to be blamed, and are considered to be the ones responsible for the break-up. This applies especially to the Arab world, since the dominant culture is male-dominated. It is important to realize that there are couple of results in which women, not men, become targets of public scrutiny. For example, a lady would fear from staying single because the older she gets, the less probability she would get married, or a divorced woman would be an insult to her family and her parents would feel ashamed by that.
