“Bernice Matice” May Not Be So Bad After All”
“I don’t believe in divorce”. Well this statement could be the understatement of the year. I have heard so many people claim this statement, but to me it is one of the most naive things anyone could ever say. Who believes in divorce? Maybe the same people who believe in suicide, or murders, or perhaps rape and death. What an unreasonable thing to say. Who would want to believe in a negative outcome? My parents sure did not believe in divorce, and neither did Birdee or Bill off of “Hope Floats”, and look where this got us! Both Bernice and I are now both faced with the reality of our parent’s decision; a decision we never thought would have to be made. Sure, it was for the best, but no one goes into marriage with the intention of it not lasting forever. No one wants the unbearable pain of heartbreak or of a torn family. No one says “until death do us part, or maybe only until we get tired of each other.” Who believes in divorce? Well I can truthfully say I do now. Using examples and references from the movie “Hope Floats”, I will discuss how divorce impacted my life, the life of the characters in the movie “Hope Floats”, and how divorce could possibly impact the lives of other people.
Divorce; this is such a simple word to have such a huge impact. It is one of those things which cannot truly be explained until one experiences it first hand. Divorce is a lot similar to the death of a loved one, except divorce is the death of ones family in a reality, the end of all which was familiar and all of which was real. Harsh, yes. . . but divorce is harsh. It takes no prisoners and asks no questions, it just . . . happens. In the movie “Hope Floats”, Birdee and Bernice’s world was torn apart when Birdee found out her husband, Bill had been cheating on her with her best friend. And to make it worse, Bill offered no apology; he only left her with the reassurance...
