1. What is diversity? Why is diversity valued? When I looked up the definition of diversity on Dictionary.com it says 1. The state or quality of being different or varied (“Dictionary.com”, 2013). I think it is valued because it brings people from different backgrounds and cultures together and teaches us about our differences as well as our similarities. It gives us the opportunity to experience other cultures and ethnic group’s traditions, and beliefs. What is ethnocentrism? In what ways can ethnocentrism be detrimental to a society? When I looked up the definition it read, ethnocentrism is the belief in the inherent superiority of one’s own ethnic group or culture (“Dictionary.com”, 2013). I think that ethnocentrism can be detrimental to society because it causes division among people. For example east coast verses west coast. Tupac verses Biggie Smalls. They both thought that they were better than the other because of where they were from, Tupac from the west coast and Biggie from the east coast. Because of how they viewed each other because of what coast they were from it caused division amongst the music community. They’re views ultimately caused their deaths.
