Difference of B2C and B2B Web Sites
Business to business (B2B) companies and business to consumer (B2C) companies have quite a few characteristics that differentiate the two. B2B companies are more relationship driven, while B2C companies are typically more product driven. Because B2C companies are product driven, they maximize the value of the actual transaction, whereas B2B companies focus more on the relationship of the customer (Marketing, 2009). The differences of each of the types of web sites will be discussed in this paper.
Business to business web sites do business with suppliers and distributors over the Internet. They work primarily selling to other businesses rather than individual consumers. B2B sites must deal with all the different phases of the buying process. Different vendors or distributors will be in different phases of the buying process, so it is necessary to offer information that will be useful to all aspects of that process, whether it is purchasing, manufacturing, or some other step involved. Also known as portals in the Internet world, "B2B concerns itself primarily with supply chain management" (Difference, 2009). In contrast, B2C focuses on selling to the individual consumer, or the end user. "B2C web sites are intermediary portals to link customers to suppliers" (Difference, 2009). Some examples of B2C web sites include Ebay.com and Amazon.com, among many others.
An example of the differences between business to business sites and business to consumer sites can be viewed by looking at two different battery web sites. Battery-Biz, Inc. is a business to business site that sells batteries to many dealers, rather than individual consumers.
