Dietary Supplements Dietary supplements are widely used throughout the world in place of eating healthier foods. Many people feel that it is a “shortcut” alternative to eating a well-balanced healthy way. According to the FDA, a dietary supplement is defined as” a product intended for ingestion that contains a "dietary ingredient" intended to add further nutritional value to (supplement) the diet.” A “dietary ingredient” is at least one or more of the following ingredients: a mineral, a vitamin, an amino acid, herbs, a concentrate, metabolite, constituent, or extract. Dietary supplements come in different forms. They come in tablets, gel caps, powders, and capsules. Dietary supplements were invented to ensure that the body gets the adequate amount of nutrients that are recommended daily. Some may also help in the aid of reducing risk of certain diseases. Dietary supplements have many benefits. There are special nutrients that are sold individually as dietary supplements so the body can have more of that nutrient if needed. For instance if you have an iron deficiency such as being anemic, you would be able to take special pills for just that.. Supplementing your diet with B vitamins can help prevent the numerous effects of vitamin deficiencies, including skin disorders, joint pain, and nerve damage. This helps aid in keeping the body healthy. Dietary supplements can also aid in keeping the body tissues in maintenance and repaired. Daily activities can put a strain on the body tissue. This can lead to osteoporosis. You can help promote proper tissue growth and bone strength by taking calcium and vitamin D. The consumption of some dietary supplements may also help prevent cancer. Many essential vitamins, including vitamins A, C and E, act as
