In Design the author use simply words, which it is also a simple poem. His choice of words were few, but very explicit. In example of line three, “Like a white piece of satin cloth.” He, the author, doesn’t want to complicate the poem by using enormous words. He wants the reader to understand what he is writing.
In his poem he shows the irony of life and the order of life. He shows that for one thing to live another must die. Yet, on the other hand he shows the agonizing death of a moth. It shows how the moth is unaware of the surroundings around him. In example, of line twelve, “Then steered the white moth thither in the night.”
It is neat that he used the color white. This could stand for many reason, but there are a few that stand out in my mind. White stands for innocence, which you have no clue to what really is going on. It shows the innocence of the spider and the moth. The spider must kill the moth to survive and the moth has no clue to what is going on. Also, it may stand for peace. The moth, spider, and the plant are all so peaceful throughout the poem.
The title of the poem is a very good choice also. The title describes the poem almost to perfection. The title “Design”, it shows the grand design for life. The poem describes the title, by the choice of words and the outline. He showed that by the words in lines 7 and 8, “ A snow-dropped spider, a flower like a froth; And dead wings carried like a paper kite.”
In an overview, I think the poem was very good. The choice of words and simplistic outlay was a good choice. I feel he did a good job on choosing the title. He has good analogies, and phrases. He used the “Circle of life” theme to describe the overall picture of his poem.
