    Southwest Airlines Co. provides low-fare, "no-frills", civil air transportation. The company was incorporated in 1967 and is headquartered in Dallas, Texas. As of December 31, 2005, it operated 445 Boeing-737 aircrafts and provided service to 61 cities in 31 states. The company also provides frequent flyer awards to business partners, including credit card companies, hotels, telecommunication companies, and car rental agencies. Southwest Airlines is the fifth largest airline company in America, operating more than 2,150 flights per day and carrying over 44 million passengers a year. Twenty-seven years ago, Rolling King, owner of floundering commuter airline, and Herb Kelleher, King’s lawyer, got together and decided to start a different kind of airline that would provide a short-haul, low-fair, high-frequency, point-to-point service in the United States. The company began service on June 18, 1971 with flights between Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio (“The Golden Triangle” as Herb called it). Southwest Airlines is the fourth largest customer airline carrier in the United States. They use all Boeing 737 jets in order to save money on training and maintenance. The average age of company’s fleet is only 8.4 years. The average trip length is 451 miles with an average duration of about one hour and 23 minutes. Southwest Airlines averages more than 2,400 flights per day, almost twice the industry average. The average one-way airfare is $75. Southwest Airlines flies to 54 cities in 28 states. Southwest Airlines is recognized as the industry leader in focused low-cost airfare by introducing new strategic competencies such as ticketless travel and selling seats through Internet sites. Southwest Airlines is also known as “Southwest Spirit” which represents their unique organizational culture. The case questions whether Southwest Airlines should expand their operations to Northeast. Actually, they already began new services to Manchester in New Hampshire on June 7, 1998 and to Islip in New York on March 14, 1999.     Southwest Airlines is one of the most profitable airlines in the airline industry. During turbulent economic times Southwest has managed to continue strong revenue growth in a disastrous environment and has operated profitably for 39 consecutive years (Mintzmyer, 2012). Southwest Airlines has capitalized on the company’s strength of being the top low cost carrier by offering a simple and efficient business plan that prides itself on customer service. Southwest utilizes only the Boeing 737 to streamline their processes, and utilizes their award winning Southwest.com to drive ticket sales. Southwest has begun to capitalize on future market opportunities by purchasing AirTran airways and is now capable of not only domestic travel, but traversing into the international travel market as well. This purchase allows Southwest to combat one of the company’s primary threats, with that being the tumultuous economy the industry has faced. The opportunities gained by the purchase of Airtran will allow the company to being capitalizing on the international market, and thus helping reduce the economic strain created by the reduction of domestic travel. Southwest has positioned itself as the top performing domestic carrier in the United States; however there are still areas where the company should focus attention. Utilizing one type of aircraft has allowed the company to streamline many of the daily tasks, however this also place the company at the mercy of their supplier and some of the union members. Southwest also only markets their products through their own internal eticketing system Southwest.com. The company should consider expanding their offerings through outside vendors.     Delta Technology, Inc is a company based out of Atlanta, Georgia which manages all of Delta's Air Line's information technology solutions, development, and support, including the award winning Delta Nervous System. Although the company is owned by Delta Air Lines it has a whole separate top management team. The current CEO is Shirley Bridges; she oversees 2,000 of Delta Technologies employees. Their mission statement ("Delta Technology exists to enable Delta Air Lines to fully achieve its goals by leveraging technology to create a competitive advantage."), suggests necessity to understand today's ever changing technologies requiring Delta Technology, Inc to exist. They are constantly scanning the environment for changes, especially closely monitoring competitors' use of technology. Considering the complexity of the system used to manage ticket sales, reservations, times, dates, prices, and destinations, Delta Technology is continuously going to be looking for ways to make things more efficient. From 1997 to 2002 Delta invested $1.5 billion on technology innovations alone, bringing making them a leader to other air lines. This investment allowed the ability to buy tickets, check arrival times, quote prices, and check in over the internet. These uses of technology have made things quicker for initial booking of fares, but are only the beginning when it comes to the technologies required for the operation of Delta.
