Death, a Tragedy or Miracle?
 

You are lying in bed and suddenly your head starts to hurt. The pain becomes unbearable; you realize something is seriously wrong. Call 911. You dial but are unable to speak. “Hello, hello, is anyone there?” the operator asks. No answer, the seizure overwhelms your senses; you fall out of bed unable to respond. Your brain is slowly hemorrhaging; you are dying. A tragedy or perhaps a miracle? Death is not always tragic.  Death is considered a new beginning for some, a fearful reality for others, yet in truth a part of every person’s life.  How you live the years you are given, how you impact the lives of others, and how you choose to face death determines whether death is tragedy or a part of the miracle of life.

Susan had been diagnosed with a cerebral arteriovenous malformation or AVM at the age of thirty by a rather insensitive doctor who stated, “You could live one year or fifteen, we don’t know”. She decided to live her life rather than wait for dying. Along the way, she encountered many obstacles. The seizures that finally ended her life interfered with her daily existence. Too many doctors’ visits, too much medication and too many tests to establish what treatment might help her.  These doctors advised her risks were too great to have a child, yet she and her husband decided they would take that risk. Subsequently, her son was born, the first of many miracles.

Despite her AVM, Susan had an amazing brain and loved math. She didn’t want to give up her career in accounting; so she continued to work as a project accountant for a construction company for many years. As time went by; complications from the medications prescribed for treatment added more obstacles to her life.  Her marriage failed, continuing seizures interfered with her ability to drive and a major seizure caused her to have an automobile accident and end her driving.
