David Lynch Mulholland Drive

Before entering to the video class on Monday morning, my friends who have watched the movie said to me, you will understand nothing, and they were right, David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive (2001) is one of the most enigmatic and mind confusing movie I have ever watched.While watching the movie I sometimes really got crazy especially during in the Club Silencio scenes and asked myself, why I am watching this extremely obscure movie, get out of the class and have a deep sleep at home.When the movie finished with a last word Silencio I saw the same expression on the others baffled face. However, while on the way of home, I put spreaded pieces together and I realize the clear distinction between fantasies of Diane and her real life. Slowly I formed out the base story, “hollywood expactations, expactations turning into nightmares, and lastly dreamin wish fulfilments ”, which was told backwards like Christopher Nolan did in Memento. As I read the reviews and researched Mulholland Drive over the internet, I recognize that I have watched a marvellous, geniously prepared movie which hides many meanings to be deconstructed. In my analysis, I tried to enlighten Diane’s fantasies by using Freudian Dream Theories and David Lynch’s hidden aproach to Hollywood.
In my opinion, the key point in the movie is the disappearance of Rita after opening the blue box which helps us to discover that the images in the first three- quarters of the movie are parts of Diane Selwyn’s dream. Before entering the real world director confuses us with inscrutable somehow independent characters whose identities shift and merge. I sometimes perceive some sort of coherent sense; but logically reasoning alone is not enough to understand exactly what's going on. However after the seperation between the real world and the fantasy, it becomes obvious that scenes in the first three- quarters of the movie are Diane’s wish fulfilments, which makes things more clear and the audience slowly begins to...
