Data Communications

INTRODUCTION

These experiments are designed to develop a better understanding of the ping utility and the causes of network delays. This was done by carrying out experiments using the different features of the ping utility and gathering data and presenting it in a spreadsheet form. The data in the spreadsheets was analyzed and conclusions about the types of delay were deduced.

EXPERIMENT 1
MTU SIZE

Method:
The following was done to determine the maximum transfer unit that can be transmitted.
An ICMP echo request with 1500 bytes and Don't Fragment bit set was sent to the host. Failure or Success was recorded.
This request was done for 500, 1000, 1490, 1200, 1480, 1400, 1470, 1475, 1473, and 1472. A result for each packet size was recorded in a table.

Analysis:
My MTU size is 1500 bytes, because the maximum length of data is 1473 and together with the Headers it will probably come up to 1500 bytes.

EXPERIMENT 2
Method:
One of the 10 hosts with the furthest header was chosen.
This site was pinged with different sized packets starting at 1400 and then going down in steps of 100 bytes until a packet with 0 bytes was sent.
The RTTs for each packet size was recorded.

A table with the host names, RTTs and packet sizes was drawn up.
A XY scatter graph was drawn to show the relationship between RTTs and packet size.
The Trend line was drawn and the correlation between RTTs and packet size was calculated.

Analysis:
A positive correlation exists because the RTTs increase as the packet sizes increase. This is because in transmission smaller packets would take less time to transmit...
