Executive summary

Woolworth Limited is the subject to investigate in this report, specifically in one of its retailing branches, Woolworth Supermarket. In 2013, Woolies is seen as one of the largest supermarket chains in Australia and it has more than 198,000 employees currently working across Australia. They have created a large culture in the organization and this report will focus on one of the most diverse culture and its ‘strong culture’ that helped them became a largest supermarket chain in the Australia. And the purpose of this report is to see how Woolworth culture fits in the cultural approaches as well as critical approaches.
Firstly, by looking at the cultural view in Woolworths and discuss about its culture. The ‘strong culture’ will be explored by using the components of Deal and Kennedy ( Values, Heroes, Rite and ritual) then to see how Woolworth culture fall into Peter and Waterman’s concept of ‘excellent culture’
Secondly, the critical theorist argued that the power is the most important concept and to support that concept. Using Woolworth’s structure to identify the symbological approach and understand the sources of power in Woolworth.
Analyzing deeper the structure, the concept Ideology and Hegemony appeared, respectively. Consequently, the Emancipation emerged and led to the Resistance in the Woolworth culture.
Finally, Woolworth gender diversity had been concerned with the feminist theory called ­standpoint feminist.
