MBA electives: Information about final paper 2007

The final paper is academic, based on appropriate research. Sources quoted - including websites - must be cited. The text must be in your own words; otherwise it is considered plagiarism and you receive 0 for the work.

The paper should be about 2000-2500 words (4 sides, 12 font, single spaced) and the format academic with, typically: abstract, introduction, note on methodology, body of the text explaining what you are doing and why, development of case or examples, theoretical section, and overall conclusions or similar organization.

The subject is the application of the ideas and frameworks discussed in class to real business situations, corporations and business settings. This may mean describing a particular culture (Japanese, Californian, Southern European, Inuit etc), a particular corporate culture (Google, Starbucks etc), a sector or industry, an issue and how it is affected by culture (e.g. teamwork, recruitment, promotion, successful M&As) for example.

Main grading criteria of written work are:

• Are there references to appropriate theoretical frameworks?

• Is there evidence of understanding models and terminology and evidence of a reasonable amount of research, thought and work?

• Is the paper well argued and reasoned, and expressed with reasonable clarity? (this is not a question of nativeness but clarity of thinking)

• Does it draw on experiences of your own or recorded in the literature?

• Does it show risk taking and original thought?

• Is style and register appropriate for a formal paper?

• Is it entirely original and in your own words?

Example of organization of the work:

Title Page 1 page (title, student name; course name);
Abstract Brief but complete summary of the work
Introduction What is the topic? Why interesting? What is the objective of your work?
Body of the manuscript Background for topic? Definitions of key concepts? Current theories?...
