HUM111 (Dr. Stansbury)
Assignment 3: Cultural Activity Report HUM111 Instructions; Rubric BASED on Course Guide, pp. 12-15
Due by 9am Eastern Time on Monday, March 17 (worth 100 points) As a way of experiencing the Humanities beyond your classroom, computer, and textbook, you are asked to do a certain type of “cultural activity” that fits well with our course and then report on your experience. Your instructor will require you to propose an activity and get instructor approval before you do it and report on it (students should look for any instructions in that respect). Every effort should be made to ensure that this is a hands-on experience (not a virtual one), that this activity fits the HUM 111 class well, and that the activity is of sufficient quality for this university course. The two key types of activities are a museum visit or a performance. This is to be a report on an activity you do DURING our 11-week HUM111 course. Note: This must not be a report on the same activity (and certainly not the same report) as done for another class, like HUM 112. For instance, one might go to the same museum as done for HUM 112, but this HUM 111 report will focus on entirely different works and displays.
1. Visit a museum or gallery exhibition or attend a theater or musical performance before the end of Week 10. The activity (museum or performance) should have content that fits our course well. Make your proposed activity known to the instructor before doing it, and get his approval before doing it. Have fun doing this.
2. Write a two to three (2-3) page report (500-750 words) that describes your experience.
Clearly identify the activity location, date attended, the attendees, and your initial reaction upon arriving at there.
Provide specific information and a description of at least two pieces (e.g., art, exhibits, music, etc.).
Provide a summary of the event and describe your overall reaction after attending the event.

For my visual analysis assignment I chose to go visit the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. It has been an extremely long time since I last visited a museum. I took my twelve year old son with me to explore what the museum had to offer. We found the art to be very interesting, educational and unique. There were so many beautiful pieces throughout the museum that it was difficult trying to decide which one I wanted to base my visual analysis on.…

Festivals are good social gatherings that bring people closer together. One festival I enjoy in particular is the Nouit Blanche art festival in Toronto. This assignment asks me to analyze an event that has taken place recently and record my observations. Some evident observations can be interpreted by the viewers expressions and non verbal cues. This assignment also asks me to relate the festival to concepts of culture. This festival relates to the concept of mass culture because this is an event that everyone of all ages and races seem to enjoy. Another thing this assignment asks is to acknowledge any limitations I may have had during the festival. Some limitations included the fact that I may have not seen the whole festival and could have…

The most recent cultural event that I have attended was a monster truck rally. This was my first monster truck event and my only expectation was an ample amount of noise. I was not disappointed. There was an arena full of people, mainly families with masses of children, who were all talking, laughing, and screaming, with the excitement of the show. There was great up front and personal experience at the beginning of the evening during the “pit party” where people could walk up to the trucks and their drivers and take pictures. I enjoyed watching the show, but more I took pleasure in watching my daughter’s excitement at all of the antics of the trucks and their drivers.…

Cross cultural communications requires not only knowledge of another language but also familiarity with nonverbal behavior and cultural practices, values, and customs. Nonverbal communications or body language is communication by facial expression, head or eye movements, hand signals, and body postures. It can be just as important to understanding as words are, because they may mean something very different from what they mean in your own culture. What might be acceptable in one culture can be considered rude and improper in another. For example, the nodding of the head up and down is a gesture that communicates a different message in different parts of the world. In North America, it means “I agree.” In the Middle East, nodding the head down means “I agree” and up means “I disagree”. In a conversation among Japanese, it often means “I am listening.” Misunderstandings can often arise between people from different cultures if they misinterpret nonverbal signals. For example, while speaking with a salesman; one Japanese student in the U.S. nodded his head politely to show he was paying attention. The next day the salesman brought a new washing machine to the student’s apartment, because he took nodding for yes.…

During the summer of 2011 a few friends and I decided to go visit another mutual friend that resides in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This would be my first trip to Pennsylvania and we all wanted to make the most of it. We decided that we would do some site seeing and just enjoy the change of environment. On June 29th, 2011 we decided that we would start our day by going to breakfast and visiting Fairmont Park. While we were there, we went to visit Memorial Hall. My initial thought of this place was “WOW”! I had never seen anything so beautiful. There was so much to see on the outside, I couldn’t wait to see what was inside.…

My cultural event is The Color Purple. Not only did I see the show but I was involved in the production. I was assigned to be a crew member, which allowed me to view the show from back stage. As an African American I felt as though this play was a great example of some of our cultural background. From the script to the scenery, this show dealt with many dynamics of African American’s (Black people) around the early 1900’s. The play also explores how life was in Africa during this time period.…
