Critical Thinking Application Paper
If we believe that thinking has set the limitations on how we have so far lived our lives, then we should also say that it can help us to make choices for our future. Choices that can include personal, financial and work ethics, these choices may also come from how and where we are brought up.
Influences from our family are strong and can positively or negatively impact our thinking.
Certain behaviors are also learned from our place of work, such as professional ethics, dress codes, other manners of behavior and work attitude. All of these influences, work, personal and family all make up who we are and why we think like we do.
The critical decision I identified was to go back to college and eventually obtain a Masters Degree. The objective was influenced by personal and professional reasons. After evaluating the situation, I realized that if I was going to be able to continue with my position as Library Director than I would need the proper degree. This important decision would impact my future and my family’s future; therefore it was important that I consider all of the factors and return to college.
The job description of the position of Library Director in my town does not require a Masters Degree in Library Science. I have maintained the position for over 6 years without the degree. We recently changed from a regional library system to a county library system and with this change the new county director has requested that all of the libraries in the system be managed by a MLIS Librarians. Therefore I must have the Masters of Library and Information Science to continue in my position.
The alternatives for this would be for me to step down and become a circulation clerk, a Para-professional or find another job. I have too much invested in this position, 2 years of college so far, retirement and a love for my job.
