China – 1935 to Present Time
Introduction
Gacsala (2004) details some of the most critical parts of Chinese history in her article, “The History of China 1935-Present”. This paper will detail the article itself as well as the relevance the article has to the class purpose. Additionally, I will provide my personal opinion with regard to the content of the article and will conclude the paper with a summary of each detailed topic.
Article Summary
Each pertinent historical event that occurred in China beginning in 1911 and continuing chronologically through the current year are detailed in sequential fashion to make up the content of this article. Gacsala presents and describes each of the significant events in Chinese history including the Manchurian war that occurred during the time frame of the mid 1930’s to the mid 1940’s. She goes on to detail World War II in 1939 and the attack on Pearl Harbor of 1941 stating that “the main thrust of the Japanese war effort turned away from fighting the Chinese and toward fighting the Americans” (Para 4) thereby deferring the Japanese efforts and allowing the Communists to consolidate their control over North China in order to prepare for the resumption of the Cival War.
The article describes the People’s Republic of China beginning in 1950, describing the choice of the Chinese to intervene in the Korean War in an effort to assist the North Koreans, thus ending the war in the year 1953. In 1962, there was much chaos, blood, and destruction which has been said to be comparable to the French Revolution as China collapsed into anarchy caused by Mao, a Chinese leader, calling upon students to rebel against authority and form the “Red Guards” (Gascala, 2004).
