Maltreatment is often physically shown in speech disorders, a lagging in physical development or the failure to thrive. Behavioral indicators or emotional maltreatment include habit disorders such as sucking, biting or rocking, conduct disorders such as antisocial behavior, neurotic disorders such as sleep problems and the lack of desire to play, hysteria, phobias, behavioral extremes such as being passive, demanding or aggressive, and acting extremely mature or immature.
Neglect is when a parent or guardian is inattentive to the basic needs of a child. Physical indicators of physical neglect include consistent hunger, poor hygiene, consistent lack of supervision for long periods or in dangerous activities, physical problems or medical needs that are left unattended or abandonment. Behavioral indicators include begging or stealing food, early arrival or late departure from school, constant fatigue, listlessness or falling asleep in class, or drug abuse.
An abused child is a person 18 years of age or younger whose parent or legal guardian inflicts or allows to be inflicted physical injury or risk of disfigurement, death, the impairment of physical or emotional health such as the loss of functions of a bodily organ.
There are several indicators of physical abuse. These include unexplained bruises or welts that exist in varying stages of healing. Behavioral indicators of physical abuse include being wary of adult contact, apprehension when other children cry, aggressiveness or withdrawal, being frightened of parents, or being afraid to go home. Physical indicators of sexual abuse include difficulty in walking or sitting, torn, stained or blood under clothing, genital pain or itching of vaginal or external genitalia, anal bleeding, vaginal disease or pregnancy.
Behavioral indicators of sexual abuse include being unwilling to change clothing for school activities, withdrawal, bizarre, sophisticated, or unusual sexual behavior, poor peer relationships, delinquent...
