16 June 2007
Johor Baru
Police have arrested 14 people who are believed to have been involved in the recent robbery and gang rape cases in Johor. They have been linked to at least two rapes and a robbery in Batu Pahat.
Raids were carried out in Kulai, a hotel room in Skudai, an apartment in Stulang Baru and in Taman Gunung Pulai during a 10 hour operation that started at 1:30am yesterday.
This followed the initial arrest of three men in a car in Kulai. The silver metallic Honda Accord was found there at a restaurant at 1:30am, which was believed to have been used in a rape and robbery case in Pantai Lido on 22 May 2007.
When a police team raided the hotel in Taman Sri Puteri, Skudai, three of the men attempted to escape by climbing through the ceiling and across the rooftop. They did not managed to escape.
A 40-year-old suspect who was arrested in Taman Desa, Kulai, had a Toyota Altis which is believed to have been used in the rape case of the 19-year-old earlier this Monday.
A special task force was set up from detectives from the state and district police headquarters. Two more suspects are still at large.
Among the 14 arrested was a 14-year-old girl who was tested positive for drugs, among six others. Six of them have had cases of carjacking, robbery, drug abuse and rape and had been held under the Emergency Ordinance.
All suspects have been held until 22 June 2007.
