Spit curls. Pants pulled down low on our hips, thin white belts buckled on the side. Shirts with three-quarter-length sleeves. Collars raised behind our necks. We should have looked cool, but we didn’t.” The first section of the definition does not fit my personal description of a “cool” person. Though I am not fully devoted on fighting against smoking, using cigarettes to be ‘cool’, or in this case to feel or try to become cool is not remotely appropriate to the situation. Using items such as cigarettes, alcohol, and other substances to try to become ‘cool’ almost does the opposite effect, and degrades the person. So in his attempt to standout he actually failed according to my definition. The spit curls also does not fit my description of a ‘cool’ person. Though my thought of spit curls might be wrong, my interpretation of ‘spit curls’ is the curls in head hair molded from actual spit. Assuming that this interpretation is correct, in my point of this can be viewed as a sign of bad hygiene. Using spit instead of shower. Coincidentally the rest of his description would fit my own, with their low pants, folded up sleeves on shirts, and popped collars. Its interesting how fads and fashions seemed to have repeated themselves. How some styles these days were modeled after that of the 70’s to the 80’s. Though what makes this different from other stories, or what makes Jack different from other characters in other books is that in this case he realizes that he doesn’t look cool, though he has tried to fit his definition as closely as possible.
