Contingency Analysis and Ranking
I am Birendra Kumar Jha, working as an Assistant Manager in Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), which is a government utility sector in Nepal. I have completed Master of Science with distinction in power system engineering from Tribhuvan University, Nepal. I am interested to complete my Ph. D. Degree in power system engineering from Indian Institute of Science (IISc).
Unlike many other institutions, IISc, Bangalore offers pure electrical engineering and I have completed the aforesaid degree. That is why I think that IISc can be the milestone for my research work. In addition to that, Electrical Engineering Department IISc is shaped by many well recognized professors like Padiyar K R, Indraneel Sen and Nagendra Rao P S, whose area of research is Power System Engineering. Fortunately, my desired research area has a close resemblance with theirs. Therefore, I believe that I will receive great supervision from them. Moreover, due to cultural resemblance and open border, relation between Nepal and India is characterized by intense people-to-people interaction. Hence, I think that IISc will be the perfect destination for Nepalese student like me.
As far my academic background is concerned, I have completed Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering in 2000 AD from Tribhuvan University (TU), Institute of Engineering, Pulchowk, a nationwide popular institute of engineering under government authority. After successful completion of Bachelor’s Degree, I got the opportunity to become a lecturer in the same university where I taught Electrical Machine, Electrical Energy Utilization and Electrical Circuits and got the experience of more than twelve months. In the mean time, I felt the due necessity of advancing my knowledge in Power System Engineering and, hence, I applied for Master’s Degree to TU. During my Master’s Degree, my thesis work was “Contingency Analysis and Ranking” that encouraged me to develop linear set of distribution factors for the

Fred E. Fiedler was one of the first leadership researchers to acknowledge that effective leadership is dependent on the characteristics of the leader and the situation. The contingency model helps to explain why a manager may be an effective leader in one situation and ineffective in another. The contingency model also shows which managers are likely to be most effective in what situations. It is said by Fiedler, that personal characteristics can influence leader effectiveness. Leader style is used to refer to a manager’s characteristic approach to leadership. There are two leader styles, to include: relationship-oriented and task-oriented leaders. Relationship oriented leaders are concerned with developing good relationships with their subordinates and being liked by them. Relationship oriented leaders focus on having high-quality interpersonal relationships with subordinates. A task oriented leader’s primary concern is to ensure that subordinates perform at a high level. A task oriented leader has a focus on how productive a subordinate’s job performance is in relation to their task accomplishment. According to Fiedler, there are three styles of leadership in a situational characteristic. These styles include: leader/member relations, task structure, and position power. Leader/member is when subordinates trust and are loyal to their leaders. Task structure is when the subordinate has a clear understanding of the job assignment. Position power is the amount of legitimate reward and coercive power a leader has by virtue of his or her position in an organization. (George & Jones, 2011)…

Having clarified the EPs’ development in the previous chapter, this chapter presents the theoretical framework that was developed to guide the data collection, analysis, and performance evaluation presented in the subsequent chapters. We first introduce structural contingency theory and its underlying assumptions. Specific attention will be given to the “patterned systems” approach (Van de Ven and Ferry 1980) which will be used to conceptualize the central aspect of “fit”. We will discuss certain shortcomings of the chosen approach and introduce the concept of social network analysis which will be employed within the contingency framework in order to sharpen the analysis. Second, we will apply the theory to the evaluation objectives of this study and define and link it to the variables.…

The ELECTRE (for Elimination and Choice Translating Reality; method was first introduced in 1966. The basic concept of the ELECTRE method is to deal with “outranking relations” by using pairwise comparisons among alternatives under each one of the criteria separately. The outranking relationship of the two alternatives Ai and Aj describes that even when the i-th alternative does not determine the j-th alternative quantitatively, then the decision maker may still take the risk of regarding Ai as almost better than Aj. Alternatives are said to be dominated, if there is another alternative which excels them in one or more criteria and equals in the remaining criteria. The ELECTRE method begins with pairwise comparisons…
