Have you ever suddenly noticed when you were in a group of people where they all were doing or saying something different to you? Did you feel uncomfortable about this? Did you feel an unspoken pressure to go along with the rest of the group? If so, you were simply complying with your need to conform.

Conformity is a process by which people's beliefs or behaviors are influenced by others within a group. There are differences in the way men and women confront, and conform to social influence. Different groups have different norms or rules to which group members conform. This can be to do with behavior, attitude, dress, language, etc. The degree to which other people conform to the rules indicates their desire to be a group member.

I believe conformity is acceptable to a certain degree. I think it is important you stay true to your beliefs and values and are not endangering yourself or others. It is your own responsibility to have boundaries and refuse any cruel or unusual authority.

One example in which conformity is sown is by catholic schools. In order to attend this type of function you must conform by wearing a uniform. I believe this is a positive example of conformity. By enforcing that everyone wears the same clothing the amount of bullying may decrease. Some other ways school increase conformity is by setting rules such as getting to class on time, no eating in the hallways, raising your hand in class ext. If you refuse to conform you may be punished by detention, suspension or expulsion. These are all non physical ways of dealing with someone who refuses authority.

I believe more people should stand up against the negative influences of conformity and take part in the one’s that will have a positive influence on their life style.
