“Marketing strategies can have a broad impact on the business in terms of instilling a marketing orientation among all those in the firm: the way of thinking or philosophy of the whole organization. However, marketing strategies can alternatively be seen as dealing only with the development of competitive advantages directly associated with the marketing function such as customer loyalty and distribution channel control. In the latter case, the domain is sometimes even further restricted by sole attention to the various element of the marketing mix rather than the more general issues of customer and channel relationships. There are two key distinctions which are central to marketing management: the selection of target markets which determine where the firm will compete and the design of marketing mix (product, price, promotion and distribution method) which will determine its success in these markets. The marketing mix refers to the apportionment of effort, the combination, the designing and the integration of the elements of marketing into a programme or “mix” which, on the basis of an appraisal of the market forces, will best achieve the objectives of an enterprise at a given time.” (Michael J. Tripadvisor Swot Analysis

TripAdvisor was founded in February 2000 by Stephen Kaufer, Langley Steinert, and several others. Stephen Kaufer says the original idea wasn't a user generated social media site to swap reviews. " We started as a site where we were focused more on those official words from guidebooks or newspapers or magazines. We also had a button in the very beginning that said visitors add your own review and boy did that just take off. Pretty soon the number of average consumer reviews far surpassed the number of "professional reviews". That is when the site really turned into this collection of what the normal traveller was saying whererever they were going. "[6] Original financing was obtained from Flagship Ventures, the Bollard Group and private investors.[7] The company was purchased by IAC/InterActiveCorp in 2004. IAC spun off its travel group of businesses under the Expedia, Inc. name in August 2005.[8]…

    Case Analysis: Tripadvisor

TripAdvisor was formed in 2000 out of the personal frustration of three people who were unable to find unbiased information on the internet regarding hotels and users’ accommodation experiences. Out of the frustration, Kaufer and his cohort set out to amalgamate users’ experiences about their travels on one site, and thus TripAdvisor was born. It is now one of the most sought-after sites for anyone who is planning a vacation, with listings of over 400,000 hotels, 90,000 attractions, and 70,000 destinations. With such a wide portfolio, it is beneficial to understand the reasons and motivations behind the company’s appeal to customers and why customers spend their time to leave reviews after their travels to the various destinations. An investigation of their success journey and the continued appeal from consumers can assist other companies to rethink how user-generated content can be effectively applied in revenue-generating activities, plus how companies can positively influence the choice making satisfaction. More so, roles are evolving and no longer are customers just passive consumers of advertisements put out by advertisers. It is not any more the prerogative of the ad agency or their…

Orbitz, which is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, officially began doing business online in June 2001, and had originally been created in 1999 by five major airline companies-American, Continental, Delta, Northwest and Untied. What’s more, Orbitz is one of many Internet travel company websites that offer services to people who are researching and planning trips and vacations. Some of these services include booking flights, cruises and hotel rooms, and also reserving rental cars. Other services are provided as well, and all of these can be combined in different configurations. For instance, there is a case that relates the following customer service in Orbitz. Scott Paton, who is an editor-at-large for Quality Digest. Scott Paton noticed two charges for the same amount and same itinerary but he had only purchased one ticket. So he logged onto the Orbitz site, and contacted the customer services to solve his problem. Finally, he received a good response from Orbitz.…
