Comparing Joe Turner's Come And Gone
The coming together of this project has really taught me a lot about the theater world as well as learning about just people in general. Why they do what they do, why they wear what they wear, and how to piece them together based solely on how they present themselves. In the coming together of my costumes for Joe Turner’s Come and Gone I first took the time to reread the play, get a feel for each character, their personalities, what other plays, TV shows or movies I could compare it to and what colors and patterns come to mind when visioning each person. When breaking all those aspects down I focused mostly on the show “Good Times”. “Good times” is pretty much around the same time period; some of the characters, for example, Zonia and Penny are similar in certain ways! They both are little children who don’t have the best of the best but their parents make sure they looked presentable. Or Florida Evans from “Good Times” who could be compared to Bertha, the mother of the house; they were both the furthering type, always there to support the young ones, give advice, and cook the meals. Or outgoing? Their ranking in society, and or there a source of income. Along side that there are also certain pieces of clothing appropriate for certain characters based of their social status or jobs. For example, Seth, who was the owner of the house but also worked outside in the yard and so forth. For a man like Seth dark colored button ups as well as suspenders would be ideal. Dark colored clothes because he works in the field, so dirt stains and things of that nature would be more difficult to get out of a white or cream shirt rather then black or olive. Also, suspenders so he doesn’t have to worry about continuously pulling up his pants while working such a thing would hinder him from getting the task at hand
