Community Service
Community service is a very important factor when it comes to bettering your society. Through my own experiences and observations I have come to support and believe my opinion on this issue. To me community service means giving back to the community, it means your helping other people. It also shows the community that the young people today have kindness and manners. And care about where they are and that they also want to live happy and in peace knowing that we can help other people and they appreciate the service we have done.he benefits of community service are helping others and knowing that your making a different, meeting new friends while networking throw the community service work you are doing and that also can be fun while bettering your self and at the same time increasing your productivity and learning new skill to use at a later time. But the best benefits of community service are to help bring change to your own environment and give your life a purpose. Community Service is our opportunity to improve not only our surroundings, but ourselves. First of all, sometimes there are needs that cannot always be filled by government; it is up to the citizens to fill that need. By taking it upon themselves to better their communities. I have done research about recycling in Puerto Rico to see if they are recycling around the community. Why is it important to recycle: It protects and expands manufacturing jobs and increases competitiveness. It also reduces the need for land filling and incineration. Puerto Rico approximately has 4 million tons of solid waste annually and only 10% of that waste is recycled, according to the Autoridad de Desperdicos solidos. Issues with recycling are that Puerto Rico's overall recycling rate is between 8-12 percent. The EPA and the solid waste Management Authority launched the Puerto Rico recycling partnership with representatives from local municipalities, academia, nonprofits, and business sectors to facilitate waste reduction and recycling in the commonwealth. The challenges are that there is limited disposal space and Puerto Rico has a delicately balanced ecosystem. Residents generate more than people living in the United States. I think that if we can put in all places recycling bins and have people actually abide by a law to do it, this would help our communities and help our environment. Since Puerto Rico is so populated and people don't care they just throw stuff anywhere without knowing how it affect us. I presume that they wouldn't want people to just throw stuff in their homes so why do it to where you live? I have started where I live with recycling and talking to the person who administrates so that people in the house complex can recycle and help the community. The government can also help by starting more campaigns and getting the communities to be more involved which will let us have a safer, cleaner environment. Letting kids have cleaner parks that they can enjoy, which is at least something to start by. Even though I think that this community project is bigger than what maybe is expected to write about for this essay I think is something possible to be done. I want my daughter to be able to grow up in a better environment and know how to recycle so she can help herself for when she grows up, because if things keep going at the rate they are the community/ environment will get worse.

“A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.” This quote by Oliver Wendall Holmes can be applied to numerous situations in our lives. Throughout my whole life, I rarely ever did community service. Though I went to nursing homes and sang carols during Christmas, I really never considered it to be true volunteer work. I was usually too busy to have any spare time to volunteer and when I did have spare time, volunteer work was never the first thing on my mind. Volunteering last Wednesday, however, did stretch my mind. Because this was my first instance of true volunteer work, everything about it was a new experience. I chose to volunteer to work the table at the blood drive at the Recreational Center because I’ve donated blood before and feel that it is very helpful and necessary to the process of saving lives. Working “behind the scenes” of the blood drive was different though. By sitting there and helping out the donors and handing out snacks afterwards, I got to see the donor community in a different way. Not only that, but a lot of times, I found it to be my responsibility to assure donors that the process was quite easy and painless. Many people came in looking unsure about whether or not they would really donate and these were the people I spent the most time talking to. My “old dimensions” were the thoughts that blood drives just easily happened; people showed up, they donated and that was all that was to it. Volunteering at the blood drive helped me better understand that things like this wouldn’t be possible if there weren’t people to volunteer at them and help everything run smoothly. By my mind being stretched by this experience, I’ve learned that even only helping out for a few hours can go a long way. I feel so much differently about volunteer work now; instead of it being a burden that I’ve been “sentenced to”, it is actually an easy way to give back to the community. On the day of the blood drive, I collected…
