College Graduate Preparation
As the economy continues to rebuild, jobs for the recent graduate are limited. In past generations, these limitations included those lacking a high school diploma. Now, many individuals are engaging in higher learning with a college education yet still struggling to find quality work. Although pursuing a college education is beneficial, it is still tiresome for many to land their “dream job.” Quality graduates are not only competing for local jobs, but in the global workplace as well. College students can prepare for a competitive job market by choosing their discipline wisely, selecting the most effective courses, and learning from others.
College students should have an early understanding of what discipline or studies of interest they like best. When selecting a discipline it may be wise to speak with someone already in that particular field. This will allow you a greater sense of direction beyond a textbook. Not only can these individuals give you great advice to get started, but may offer you internships or a career. Keep these people in mind while you build your own education, as keeping in touch with great contacts can also lead you to great opportunities.
Once a discipline or area of interest has been decided it becomes very important to select courses that will help you understand your discipline better. You should also take courses outside of your discipline to broaden your education. Having knowledge and understanding in multiple areas can only benefit your resume, possibly helping you land a job over another applicant. Once you are applying for a specific job, it is important to stand out from the rest of the applicants. Learn a foreign language and understand as much about different cultures as possible. These traits will become more important as many jobs are being shipped overseas. In a global market, being able to break the language barrier between clientele will look great for the company and you as the employee....
