A Child Writes From Her Everyday World:

Meera’s background is very unique and absolutely different from the typical child raised by both mother and father and siblings. Meera’s family incorporates both the Gujarati and English language at home. In Meera’s case, there are different activities that surround her at home which play an important role in her school behavior and therefore, allows her to explore the different literacy backgrounds.
In Meera’s family, her parents own a shop where she has a variety of literacy experiences both in English and Gujarati. With that in mind, she is also exposed to the English language by her sibling, Pinal. Both of these languages that surround Meera are completely opposite from each other, especially different styles of writing. Having exposed Meera to the different languages both at the shop and at home have brought her into incorporating it at school as well.   Meera has managed to grasp what she learns at the shop with her parents and role-play in school and also the English language that she learns through her sister. Knowing that Meera is learning different methods from different angles, we can see that Meera is able to grasp a little from each and act on it. She is able to express herself for example when a group photograph is taken and makes her own text to it saying “That’s my shop”.   She seems to enjoy acting out as she is in her shop and dealing with office games which is what she sees being taken place in the shop.
Meera’s sister, Pinal also plays an important role in her life.   Meera wants to act out what her sister Pinal is engaged in such as homework and she too wants to do the same and watching her sister allows her to develop her knowledge of writing. As Meera watches the Gujarati text taken place at home, she also wants to act as she is writing in Gujarati.   Meera is being exposed to both the Gujarati text and the English text which allows her to try and connect to both languages and, when writing we see that she is writing in both English and...
