Assessment Task 1*: Responding to babies’/infants’ cues and needs.

Over a period of a day, observe two babies/infants.

Describe the verbal and non-verbal communication used by each child to communicate their needs. (Two column table – 120 words)

Lillian (15mts)

 Crying when hungry tired.
 Laughing/giggling when happy whilst be played with tickled.
 Put arms up when wanting to be cuddled/held
 Would say ‘lap’ when wanting to sit on my lap
 Would say no and stop when she didn’t like something

Lucas (19mts)

 Squealing when unhappy for eg: being touched unwontedly by another child or when frustrated eg: reaching a toy he couldn’t grasp or another child was playing with.
 Crying when need of something such as food or upset about something such as being dropped off in the mornings.
 Would answer yes or no when being asked if he had to go to the toilet and would also say poo’s after he had been and needed a nappy change.
 Saying ‘up’ or cuddles when wanting to be held also saying ‘down’ or pointing towards the floor when wanting to hop back down.
 Holding his nappy front when needing to do a wee.

How many times did you cuddle each of these two children? For what purpose? (Two column table – 60 words)

Lillian

Over the period of a day I cuddled Lillian 8 times;

1. When she fell over during play time whilst pulling herself up against the activity centre in order to console her.
2. After she woke up from her sleep to ease her transition back into the room and comfort her.
3. On three separate occasions where Lillian asked for cuddles.
4. When she was being dropped off in the morning to help comfort her and ease the separation from her mum.
5. During group time when Lillian became upset due to being tired I cuddled her to again comfort and reassure her.
Lucas

Over the period of a day I cuddled Lucas 8 times;
