Bulimia Nervosa
I truly believe that you can never judge another person’s situation unless you’ve
experienced it for yourself. You have to understand what that individual is thinking or feeling at
that moment, this determines the individual’s actions towards that particular situation. I believe
this deeply because I’ve seen first-hand the effects of bulimia nervosa. A very close family
member of mine was tormented by this disorder for several years. This is psychological disorder
that has become common among young women as well as middle aged women.
What Bulimia Is
Bulimia is a disorder centered around an individuals obsession with food and weight.
This disorder involves eating large amounts of food and then purging it by way of vomiting,
laxatives, and excessive exercise. My relative, who happened to be female, possessed all these
symptoms. She was always on some new weight loss diet, but would binge on food during
family functions and any other functions where food was near. Then after the binging took place,
she would feel guilty and would immediately go to the nearest toilet to vomit. The whole family
knew of this predictable cycle of hers, but it was never taken as a serious disorder. Like my
relative, other individuals suffering with bulimia believe that by taking those measures to
“purge” food, they are preventing fat and calorie accumulation in there bodies.
What Causes Bulimia
There are many associated causes for this disorder. Most bulimic individuals have a
phobia of fat, have been sexually abused as a child, have low self esteem, or have problems from
childhood in general. I truly agree with Sigmund Freud’s belief that the root cause of most
psychological disorders start in childhood. My relative is a prime example of Freud’s theory. As
