For those travelling to China, there are a few useful tips that may help make your trip more comfortable. Also included in this section of the brochure is advice that will assist in running the trip smoother.
In order to travel to china you will need to have possession of the correct visa and a passport that will remain valid for the duration of your trip. In order to obtain the correct visa, contact the Chinese consulate.
When both visa and passport are ready, you may want to make some health checks, even though it is not required; it is recommended that you get up-to-date with all your vaccinations and to get a doctor’s check up to make sure you are fit to travel. Also, it is insisted that you purchase a mask in order to travel the dusty streets of China in comfort.
Now for some advice, if you are going to china not just for tourism but to visit people too; it would be considerate to bring along a gift. When choosing your gift, avoid white, grey and black colours (as they are colours that signify death), also avoid yellow flowers (as they are what are used at funerals) and red ink (as it represents the end/moving on of a relationship). When giving (or receiving) a gift, use two hands and do not be surprised if your gift is refused. The refusal of a gift is a sign of modesty and absence of greed. If your gift is refused, try once or twice more; remember, INSIST! INSIST! INSIST!
A big part of Chinese culture is its food. So how you eat is very important, this is as the Chinese have many traditional taboos. Three main taboos are
1) Keep your elbows off the table; this is just a sign of respect for those around you.
2) Don’t tap your bowl with your chop sticks, as this is what beggars did in the past for money. Again, this is done through respect for those around you.
