Mastering Self Leadership Report

Self-leadership is a trait that everyone possesses, whether they know it or not. During at least one point in their lives, everyone has had to take responsibility and lead themself in order to achieve their goal. Not everyone realizes it, but everyone has done it. The book Mastering Self-Leadership: Empowering Yourself for Personal Excellence by Christopher P. Neck and Charles C. Manz explains the different types of leadership, different approaches to self-leadership, and how you can lead yourself through numerous situations using multiple self-leadership concepts. Overall, this is a great book that will definitely help you become a better leader to others, as well as yourself, and will help you achieve your goals.
Summary
Chapter one explains what leadership is, what the different types of leadership are, and how we all lead ourselves. It is a basis for the rest of the book. Chapter two talks about how both personal and external factors shape our personality. How each individual processes and reacts to what goes on in the world is what our personality is, so the outside world plays a major factor on how we act. Chapter three explains that not everything in life is easy to do and it shows you how to overcome obstacles in life. It starts off by assessing your self-leadership skills with a brief assessment and then goes on to explain how to remove negative cues, implement positive cues, setting specific long and short-term goals, searching and defining purpose in life, and how to achieve your goals using self-reward, self-punishment, and practice. Chapter four goes into depth on the importance of natural reward. Natural reward is getting enjoyment from doing an activity without doing it for the sole purpose of a physical reward. This means that you are doing something because you like to do it, not because you will get a pay raise or promotion from it. Chapter four goes onto

There were many things I learned from this book, but there are a few concepts that stand out. I quote the author “Leadership begins on the inside with self-awareness and self esteem and the process of leadership involves regular and intense reflection and introspection”. The order of responsibility for a servant leader should be; 1. the employee involved, 2. the affected employees and finally 3. the organization. I believe the “regenerative circle of prosperity” is a great thought. This is where the customer, the sales…

According to Reh (2014), a leader is a “person who has a vision, a drive and a commitment to achieve that vision, and the skills to make it happen” (para. 2). I want to be a leader; however I must understand my leadership style at this moment to understand where I am at, where I want to be, and what I need to do to get there. Raines (2014) states “your style defines your values and perspective, and being aware of it will aid your communication with those you work with” (para. 1).…

One might say the term leadership demonstrates qualities like commanding, direct, bold, and courageous while others think of servant leaders who give to the community and stay in the shadows. A stereotype associated with a leader is someone who orders people around while yelling or doing other things in a bold manner. After reading this book, you will learn that that stereotype is not completely accurate because we tend to forget the leaders who instead of boldly direct people, stay in the background and let their pupils take the jump at the situations using their own personal skills. These are just two forms of leadership that are used in the book and in everyday life. This symbolism plays a large role throughout the book, enabling us to look at leaders in…

Over the last few decades, many people have asked these questions. As a result, the topic of leadership has gained the attention of researchers worldwide and a multitude of books has been published. As Northouse (2013) points out, leadership is a complex process, “as many as 65 different classification systems have been developed to define the dimensions of leadership and there are almost as many different definitions of leadership as there are people who have tried to define it” (p. 2). As someone in a position of leadership, it is essential to recognize and develop a personal style they can implement.…

The leadership dimension I’ve identified as a weakness and area I’d like to improve upon is “Self-Knowledge and Openness to Learning”. When it comes to understanding what my limits are based on my own strengths and weaknesses, I fall short. I sometimes overestimate my own ability to perform and overextend myself, which can lead to me not meeting commitments.…

    Leadership Book Summary

The leadership book I chose was “ When Teams Work Best: 6,000 Team Members and Leaders Tell What it Takes to Succeed” by Frank Lafasto and Carl Larson. Frank Lafasto and Carl Larson observed 6,000 team members and leaders to teach individuals functional and dysfunctional ways of leadership. In the prologue, Lafasto and Larson discuss the Five Dynamics of Working Together. This includes team member, team relationships, team problem solving, team leadership, and organization environment. These are each described in the five chapters. Lafasto and Larson also talk about teamwork and collaboration in the prologue. This refers to people with different views and perspectives coming together, putting aside their narrow self -interests, and discussing issues openly and supportively in an attempt to solve a larger problem or achieve a broader goal. This concept is used throughout the book. From chapter one What Makes a Good Team Member, the most significant part of the chapter was learning what how an effective team member adds value to the team by addressing issues, building confidence and trust, demonstrating personal leadership, and bringing out the best thinking and attitude of everyone on the team. Another thing I found significant from this chapter was the three variations of collaboration. The three variations of collaboration are collectively oriented team members improve personal performance of teammates, good intentioned and desire to work collaboratively but difficulty fitting their behaviors to their intentions or desires, and egocentric members are competitive or have placed themselves beyond ethical and moral boundaries. In the second chapter Team Relationships, the most significant thing was the four underlying characteristics of good relationships are constructive, productive, characterized by mutual understanding, and self-corrective. These four characteristics are needed for leadership. In chapter three, Team Problem Solving, the model Five Steps to…

In determining where I am as a manager now I was asked to take several assessments throughout this course that provided information to be about being a manager. I took the free Kolb Learning Style Inventory test online. (Advanogy.com) According to the test the area in which I scored the highest was solitary. I also had above average scores for verbal, logical, and social. (Advanogy.com) While at first I thought this was somewhat contradictory my two highest areas being social and solitary I can understand how that is. I do enjoy socializing and the company of other people, but I prefer to work on my own at least or with some space and distance with others. I also do agree that I am verbal and logical as I read a lot and enjoy having a large vocabulary even if I do not get to use it very much in either social or professional settings. I did always prefer the English and Social Science courses growing up in comparison with math and science classes. I also took the Leadership Trustworthiness quiz to see how trusted I am as a leader. (Matt M. Starcevich) It took the quiz answering the questions in response to how I would handle that situation in my workplace as a leader and manager. I received a 52 out of a possible 100 on the scale which put me at the low end of the: A rock, sometimes you skip along the surface, sometimes you sink. Your closest confidants can trust you, others are not sure, sometimes yes, sometimes no. The word is consistency. Seek out and change those actions that are sending mixed signals if you want higher levels of trust from others.” (Matt M. Starcevich) I agree with my individual results, the assessments did a good job of analyzing the type of person I am for the most part. The key then of course is what does this say in relation to what we learned in this course about what the ideal manager should be like.…

Chapter one is a comparison between the famous Albert Einstein’s equation and the Leadership Energy’s equation. It is a little bit unclear and creating curiosity, but everything will be answer and become much clearer from chapter 2 on. I really like chapter 6, communication conductor, because to me, communication is the key. It could be the most important one. In my personal experience, I work at couple of different places, but only at one place that I really felt the energy to go to work, and happy with it.
